Mr. and Mrs. Ranchhand moved from Las Vegas to Pahrump, Nevada a few years ago after finding a two acre chunk of high desert that bordered on BLM land. It was just tumbleweeds and dust but we just loved the location so we bought it and then had a brand new house delivered. The first couple years we were always building something or planting something. We added a garage, a fenced back yard with a lawn, decks and stone patio's, a pond with a waterfall and flower gardens for Mrs. Ranchhand to putter around with and our very own swimmin' pool. The pool is a great place to relax during summer evenings and look up at the stars and wonder if those stars are really there since they are light years away. That's a lot further than a man on a good horse can cover in a day. Our property is was perfect for our dogs, three retired racing Greyhounds, Frankie a small waste of fur and Big Paulie a Lab-Collie mix we rescued from the pound and Mr. Dusty our 120 pound GSD puppy. The ranch wasn't complete until Mrs. Ranchhand called me at work one afternoon. Something like "Honey, I bought a Horse", crackled over my cellular phone. Hoping she said I bought a horse instead of I want a divorce I said "That's fine, see you when I get home". One horse led to another and soon we were busy again putting in posts and fencing off a half acre turn-out area, putting in some sturdy corrals and a 50 foot round pen. Now we're doing what we always wanted to do, Just Horse Stuff. We focus on ground work as we feel that is the foundation of training and building trust and confidence with the horse. Ground Work is simple. If Your feet are on the ground and your horses hooves are on the ground. You are doing Ground Work. |
